Convert weeks and months with a stated assumption
A week always contains seven days, but a calendar month can contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. That means weeks and calendar months do not have one exact fixed conversion. This calculator makes the assumption visible: choose an average Gregorian month for general estimates, a 30-day month for a simplified planning convention, or a four-week month when that is the rule used by a program or schedule.
Weeks to months formula
The default method uses the average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days divided by 12. That makes an average month 30.436875 days, or 4.348125 weeks.
average months = weeks x 7 / 30.436875
average months = weeks / 4.348125
For example, 8 weeks contains 56 days. Dividing 56 by 30.436875 gives approximately 1.83987 average months. This is a duration estimate, not a statement that every eight-week span crosses the same number of named calendar months.
Months to weeks formula
For the reverse calculation, multiply months by the selected number of days per month and divide by seven.
weeks = months x days per month / 7
Using the average Gregorian convention, one month is approximately 4.348125 weeks and two months is approximately 8.69625 weeks. Under a four-week convention, one month is exactly four weeks by definition, but that is shorter than most calendar months.

Average month versus calendar month
The average-month method spreads the Gregorian calendar's 146,097 days in 400 years evenly across 4,800 months. It is useful for reporting, comparison, and approximate duration conversion. A real calendar interval must instead use actual start and end dates. January 15 to February 15 is one calendar month even though it contains 31 days; February 15 to March 15 can contain 28 or 29 days.
Why 4 weeks is not usually one calendar month
Four weeks equals exactly 28 days. Most calendar months are longer, so repeatedly treating a month as four weeks creates a growing difference. Twelve four-week periods total 336 days, which is about 29.24 days shorter than the average Gregorian year. A four-week month is appropriate only when a payroll cycle, benefits rule, subscription, pregnancy convention, or other system explicitly defines it that way.
When a 30-day month is useful
A 30-day convention makes one month equal to 4.285714 weeks. It can be useful for rough budgeting or systems whose written rules specify 30-day periods. Financial contracts may use specialized day-count conventions such as 30/360, but those rules affect interest accrual and should not be inferred from an ordinary weeks-to-months conversion.
Calendar basis and source
The default average follows the Gregorian calendar rather than the older Julian average of 365.25 days. The U.S. Naval Observatory explanation of leap years states that the Gregorian pattern includes 97 leap days per 400 years, producing an average year of 365.2425 days. Dividing that average by 12 is a transparent convention for approximate month conversion.
Pregnancy, age, and deadline calculations
Pregnancy is commonly tracked in completed weeks because weeks are consistent while months vary. Converting pregnancy weeks to average months can be a helpful orientation, but clinical timing should remain in weeks and days and follow the provider's dating method. Age, legal deadlines, leases, medical schedules, and billing periods should also use actual dates when the rule says “calendar month.” Use the date calculator or time duration calculator when start and end dates matter.
Rounding guidance
Keep several decimal places when one converted result feeds another calculation, then round the final answer for its purpose. Two decimal places are usually enough for a general estimate. Do not interpret extra displayed decimals as calendar certainty: the selected month definition, not arithmetic precision, is the largest source of difference.
Frequently asked questions
How many months is 8 weeks?
Eight weeks is about 1.83987 average Gregorian months, 1.86667 thirty-day months, or exactly two four-week months.
How many weeks are in one month?
An average Gregorian month is about 4.348125 weeks. An actual named calendar month spans four weeks plus zero to three days.
Is 12 weeks three months?
It is exactly three four-week periods, but about 2.7598 average Gregorian months. The calendar answer depends on the starting date.
How many months is 52 weeks?
Fifty-two weeks is 364 days, or about 11.9592 average Gregorian months.
Which month definition should I choose?
Use average Gregorian for general conversion, 30-day only when that convention is intended, and four-week only when the applicable schedule explicitly uses 28-day periods.
