Convert seconds to hours, minutes, and seconds

Divide seconds by 3,600 to get decimal hours. For a component duration, take the whole hours first, then divide the remaining seconds by 60 to find minutes. The seconds left over complete the result. Hours in this format can exceed 24; a separate breakdown groups full 24-hour days.

decimal hours = seconds / 3,600
whole hours = floor(seconds / 3,600)
minutes = floor(remaining seconds / 60)

Worked duration examples

3,661 seconds is 1 hour, 1 minute, and 1 second, or about 1.016944444444 decimal hours. For a longer interval, 356,442 seconds is 99 hours, 0 minutes, and 42 seconds. Grouping full days gives 4 days, 3 hours, 0 minutes, and 42 seconds. Check it by multiplying 99 by 3,600 and adding 42.

Decimal hours are not an hours-and-minutes code

1.5 hours means 1 hour and 30 minutes, not 1 hour and 5 minutes. To reverse the conversion, multiply decimal hours by 3,600. For example, 0.1 hour is 360 seconds, or 6 minutes. Neither conversion applies payroll rounding, unpaid breaks, or overtime rules.

Fractional seconds and precision

Inputs accept nonnegative ordinary decimals with up to six decimal places. The component breakdown uses integer microsecond arithmetic, so 59.999999 seconds stays below one minute and 60 seconds becomes exactly one minute. Decimal hours can repeat and are rounded for display; the component duration preserves the supported input precision.

The total duration is limited to 9,007,199,254.740991 seconds to keep integer microseconds within the supported range. Enter decimal hours in ordinary notation, not hours:minutes:seconds or scientific notation.

Fixed durations versus calendar time

The NIST Guide to the SI gives 60 seconds per minute, 3,600 seconds per hour, and 86,400 seconds per day. Those are the fixed-duration units used here. This converter does not determine the elapsed time between local timestamps or model daylight-saving transitions, time zones, or leap seconds.

For two clock times or dates, use the time duration calculator and review its same-clock assumptions. To convert a quantity already in minutes, use the minutes to seconds calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many seconds are in an hour?

One hour contains 3,600 seconds.

Why does the result show 99 hours rather than 3 hours?

The hours-minutes-seconds result keeps all whole hours. The days result groups each full 24 hours into a day, leaving hours from 0 through 23.

Does 1.30 hours mean 1 hour 30 minutes?

No. It means 1.3 decimal hours, or 1 hour and 18 minutes.
