Methodology
Understand calculator models, worked checks, rounding, example values and the limits of our review coverage.
Choose the model that matches your task
NS Calculators provides tools for specific calculations, from unit conversions to estimates using values you enter. Read the inputs, units, formula and assumptions on the individual page before using its answer. A volume estimate, a package count and an installation recommendation are different tasks. Tools that are not ready are marked unavailable rather than presented as working calculators.
What our checks establish
We maintain automated checks for selected calculators and specified input scenarios, and use worked examples and source material to investigate changes and reported errors. Review coverage differs between tools. Passing those checks does not certify every calculator, every possible input or every real-world application. A source citation identifies supporting material, not an endorsement by that organization.
We use automated and AI-assisted tools during development to draft code, explanations and checks. That process is not professional certification. The worked examples and model limits below show what you can inspect for yourself.
Three calculations you can reproduce
Adding measured areas
In the area calculator, two non-overlapping rectangles measuring 12 x 14 ft and 8 x 8 ft give 168 + 64 = 232 ft². This checks a sum of entered measurements; it does not measure a room from a map or determine which surfaces belong in your project.
Volume before weight
The gravel calculator gives 20 x 10 x (3/12) = 50 ft³, or 50/27 cubic yards, for a 20 x 10 ft area and an entered 3 in loose layer. Weight stays unknown until a supplier density is entered. That geometric result does not choose a material grade, required depth or compaction factor.
Whole packages after allowance
In the mulch calculator, an entered 10% allowance changes that 50 ft³ target to 55 ft³. A 2 ft³ bag label gives 55/2 = 27.5, rounded up to 28 whole bags. They provide 56 ft³: 5 ft³ of planned allowance and 1 ft³ of package-rounding excess beyond the original 50 ft³. The example depth and allowance are editable assumptions, not universal gardening guidance.
Rounding, missing information and example values
These volume workflows use unrounded intermediate quantities; their displayed decimals may be rounded. Whole packages require a final upward rounding step, while an unrounded bulk-volume estimate is a different output. Read the tool's own explanation when comparing results.
For Gravel and Mulch, a blank optional price means unknown, while an explicit $0 is a zero-price scenario. Gravel weight also needs density, and Mulch bag count needs a volume label. Example prices, rates and dimensions are not current supplier or lender quotes. Replace them with information appropriate to your own calculation and check which fees or conditions the model excludes.
Sources and changing information
Conversion factors, product coverage, quoted prices and rules have different sources and update needs. Use the references and scope described on each page. A valid example does not establish current product suitability, legal compliance, medical advice or a professional assessment. Verify important decisions against the relevant current authority, supplier or qualified professional.
Report a reproducible correction safely
Use the contact page to see the available reporting route. GitHub technical reports and replies are public. Share made-up or anonymized inputs, their units, the observed answer and the expected calculation so the issue can be reproduced. Do not include private financial or health details, personal contact information or URLs with private query parameters. A private contact channel is not currently published.
