Personal loan payments and net cash

The loan principal is the amount your monthly principal-and-interest payments repay. An origination fee can reduce the money you receive without reducing that balance. This tool separates principal, disbursement, upfront fees, net cash available, monthly insurance, interest and total borrowing cost. Initial values are examples, not rate quotes or approval terms.

Monthly payment formula

payment = principal x monthly rate / (1 - (1 + monthly rate)^(-number of payments))
monthly rate = annual note rate / 12; at 0%, payment = principal / number of payments

A $10,000 loan at a 10% annual note rate over 60 months has a modeled principal-and-interest payment of about $212.47. Interest totals about $2,748.23 before any fee or insurance. The first payment is one monthly period after funding; the selected month labels that payment, not a particular day or a daily-interest calculation.

Deducted fee versus an upfront fee

A 5% origination fee on $10,000 is $500. If deducted, the disbursement is $9,500 and the balance repaid is still $10,000. If paid upfront at funding, disbursement is $10,000 and the separate upfront payment is $500. Both leave $9,500 net cash at funding under the same-day assumption, so their modeled cash-flow cost rate is equal when all other inputs match.

With this fee and no insurance, borrowing cost is $2,748.23 interest plus $500, or about $3,248.23. The monthly loan payment is unchanged. A fee paid later, added to principal, refunded on early payoff or applied to a different base needs a different model. A fee-inclusive APR should not be entered as the note rate while also entering the same fee separately.

Insurance and total cash outflow

When enabled, the insurance amount is paid every month for the complete entered term, separately from principal and interest. It is not financed, does not reduce the balance and is not a one-time premium. At $10 per month for 60 months it adds $600. Total borrowing cost includes all modeled interest, the origination fee and these insurance payments.

The pie describes cash paid, not only interest: a deducted-fee case splits the repaid principal into net disbursement and the withheld fee; an upfront-fee case shows principal plus that separately paid fee. The pieces sum to the total cash outflow shown. Do not add net cash available as another repayment cost.

Cash-flow cost rate is not a lender disclosure

The displayed annualized cash-flow cost rate solves for the monthly discount rate equating net cash available at funding to all modeled monthly payments, then multiplies that monthly rate by 12. It includes every entered insurance payment. It is not an effective annual yield, a legal APR calculation, or a determination of whether a particular optional insurance product is a finance charge. Use the lender's actual disclosures when comparing regulated APRs.

The CFPB distinguishes interest rate from APR, which can include additional charges. Compare like measures rather than treating a note rate, this scenario cost rate and a disclosed APR as interchangeable.

Repayment schedule and limits

The schedule uses full-precision monthly interest on the opening balance and shows principal, interest, insurance and remaining balance. Displayed amounts round to cents; adding already-rounded rows may differ from the unrounded totals. The final loan installment clears the remaining principal rather than leaving a rounding balance. This is not a lender payoff quote.

The numerical scope is $0.01-$1 billion principal, a 0%-100% annual note rate, and 1-600 whole monthly payments. Additional months must be 0-11. These limits do not imply a lender offers those terms. A fee must leave positive net cash. Dates label whole months and the schedule must end by December 9999. There are no late charges, daily accrual, prepayment penalties, extra payments, rate changes, credit approval or state-law limits in this model.
