Boat loan payment and purchase budget

Start with the negotiated boat price and your cash down payment. The amount financed is price minus down payment, plus purchase tax and fees only when you choose to finance them. A dollar down payment and a percentage of the boat price are alternative inputs, not two deposits. Initial amounts and rates are examples, not current offers, required down payments or approval criteria.

How boat payments are calculated

Principal = boat price - cash down + financed purchase costs. Monthly payment = principal x r / [1 - (1 + r)^(-n)], where r = annual note rate / 1200 and n = whole monthly payments.

At zero interest, payment is principal divided by months. The annual note rate is the nominal interest rate used for monthly amortization, not a fee-inclusive APR. Do not enter the same finance charge both through an APR and as a separate fee. The CFPB explains the distinction between interest rate and APR. Use the lender's disclosures for actual loan comparisons.

Worked purchase example

A $50,000 boat with 20% down has a $10,000 down payment and $40,000 principal before purchase costs. At a 7.5% annual note rate over 120 months, the monthly loan payment is about $474.81 and total interest is about $16,976.85. Financing $3,000 of purchase tax and fees instead raises principal to $43,000 and payment to about $510.42; it does not turn those fees into a monthly charge. Paying the same $3,000 upfront leaves the original $40,000 principal and raises purchase cash due to $13,000.

Purchase costs versus recurring boating costs

Tax and fees are one-time purchase amounts you supply from a quote. The calculator does not determine a state's tax base, trade-in allowance, tax cap, registration rules or whether a lender permits a charge to be financed. Enter the combined quoted amount, then select financed or upfront. Unchecking the purchase-cost option excludes those fields entirely.

Annual insurance, storage and other operation are separate budget assumptions. Include maintenance, fuel, recurring registration and other expected expenses in the last field without duplicating amounts already entered. Annual totals are divided by 12 for an average monthly reserve, not a claim that bills arrive monthly. For example, $1,200 insurance plus $2,400 storage adds a $300 monthly reserve to the loan payment. These costs are not financed and do not affect the repayment pie or amortization balance. Discover Boating's boat-buying guide includes an ownership-budget worksheet beyond the loan itself.

Reading the results and schedule

The repayment pie contains principal and interest only; its total is scheduled loan payments, not the full purchase cash flow. Purchase cash due is cash down plus any upfront tax and fees. Modeled cash through the loan term adds purchase cash due, all loan installments and the entered annual operating reserve prorated over that term. It is not economic ownership cost: no future resale proceeds, depreciation, sale taxes or remaining value are subtracted.

The schedule labels payment one with the entered first payment month and assumes equal monthly periods. It uses unrounded amounts internally, with displayed rows rounded to cents; a sum of rounded rows may differ slightly from the displayed total. With a fully cash-funded boat and no financed fees, there is no loan schedule or interest. The rate is then unused, while the entered term still determines the operating-reserve budget horizon.

Scope and omitted costs

Supported planning inputs are a positive boat price up to $1 billion, a down payment no greater than price, resulting principal up to $1 billion, a 0%-100% note rate and a 1-600-month budget horizon. These are numerical bounds, not lender offers. No trade-in payoff, balloon, daily accrual, variable rate, early payment, penalty, lender approval or legal APR is modeled. Use the loan calculator for other repayment structures and the personal loan calculator when a disbursement has withheld origination fees.

Does a lower monthly payment mean a cheaper boat loan?

Not necessarily. Changing the term changes both payment and total interest. Compare principal, total scheduled payments, upfront cash and the separate operating reserve together. A mathematical payment estimate is not a loan offer or an affordability decision.
