Calculate a tip and split the bill
Enter the bill before adding a tip, your chosen tip percentage, and a whole number of people. Amounts are in US dollars. The bill accepts up to two decimal places and the percentage up to four. Zero tip is allowed.
Tip calculation example
tip = bill x tip percentage / 100
total = bill + rounded tip
For an $80 bill and a 20% tip, the tip is $16 and the total is $96. Two people pay $48 each. The tip is rounded once to the nearest cent, with an exact half-cent rounded up, before the total is divided.
When a split leaves a penny
A $100 total divided among three people cannot be paid as three identical cent amounts. One person pays $33.34 and two pay $33.33, adding to exactly $100. The result gives a cent-balanced split rather than presenting three rounded payments that leave the bill short. People sharing the bill decide who pays the extra cent.
Tax and included service charges
The percentage applies to the entire bill amount you enter. For a tip based on a pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal; add any tax or other charges separately when settling the actual bill. To calculate a tip on a tax-inclusive amount, enter that amount instead. This page does not infer sales tax or subtract an included gratuity. Check the receipt for an existing tip or service charge before adding more.
Frequently asked questions
What is 15%, 18%, or 20% of $80?
The tips are $12, $14.40, and $16 respectively. The corresponding totals are $92, $94.40, and $96.
Can everyone pay exactly the same amount?
Only when the total in cents divides evenly by the number of people. Otherwise, the suggested shares differ by one cent.
Does this split individual orders?
No. It splits the entered bill and tip equally apart from the cent remainder; it does not allocate different orders or separate tax amounts.
