How to convert feet to meters

Multiply a length in feet by 0.3048 to convert it to meters. The factor is exact, so any rounding happens only when the result is displayed. When a measurement includes inches, divide the inches by 12, add that decimal to the feet, and then multiply the combined value by 0.3048.

meters = (feet + inches / 12) x 0.3048

Feet and inches example

For 5 feet 10 inches, first convert 10 inches to 0.833333 feet. The total is 5.833333 feet, and 5.833333 x 0.3048 equals 1.778 meters. The calculator keeps the unrounded value during the calculation and also reports centimeters, decimal feet, and total inches.

Common height conversions

US height is often written with separate feet and inches, while many international forms request meters or centimeters. Use the second input for the inches portion rather than treating a value such as 5 ft 10 in as 5.10 decimal feet.

Why 0.3048 is exact

The modern international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 meter. The NIST Guide to the SI conversion tables documents this relationship. Because the factor is defined rather than measured, values such as 1 foot = 0.3048 meter and 100 feet = 30.48 meters are exact before display rounding.

International foot versus US survey foot

The former US survey foot was slightly longer, at approximately 0.3048006096 meter. NIST states that it became obsolete for most uses on January 1, 2023, with exceptions for historical and legacy applications. This calculator uses the international foot. If you are converting coordinates or archived survey records, confirm which foot definition the source data uses before calculating. See the NIST US survey foot reference for the distinction.

Where feet-to-meter conversion is used

Feet commonly appear in US room dimensions, building plans, property descriptions, human height, aviation altitude, and product specifications. Meters are standard in scientific work and widely used for construction and everyday measurement outside the United States. For a rectangular room, convert each dimension separately before multiplying; converting square feet to square meters requires an area factor, not the linear 0.3048 factor.

Rounding feet and meters

Choose the number of decimal places according to the measurement itself. Two decimal places in meters are often enough for a rough room dimension, while product drawings or engineering work may require millimeters and documented tolerances. Do not report more precision than the original measurement supports. The calculator displays up to six decimal places in the headline and up to eight in the calculation details.

Frequently asked questions

How many meters are in one foot?

One foot equals exactly 0.3048 meter. Multiply any number of feet by 0.3048.

How do I convert meters back to feet?

Divide meters by 0.3048. The reverse mode also separates the decimal result into whole feet and remaining inches.

Is 5 feet 10 inches the same as 5.10 feet?

No. Ten inches is 10/12, or about 0.833333 foot, so 5 ft 10 in is about 5.833333 decimal feet and exactly 1.778 meters.

How many meters are in 100 feet?

One hundred feet equals exactly 30.48 meters because 100 x 0.3048 = 30.48.

Can I enter more than 12 inches?

Yes. The calculator adds all entered inches to the total length. For example, 5 feet plus 14 inches is treated as 6 feet 2 inches.
