How many deck boards do I need?
Enter the deck dimensions, actual board width, spacing gap, and stock-board length. The calculator determines the number of board rows, rounds each row to whole stock lengths, applies waste, and estimates joists, fasteners, packages, and material cost.

Deck-board example
A 16 ft by 12 ft deck using 5.5 in boards with a 1/8 in gap needs 26 rows. With 16 ft stock, each row uses one board. Adding 10% waste produces an order of 29 full boards. At $35 each, the board estimate is $1,015.
Joists and fasteners
For a 16 ft joist run at 16 in on center, this planning model counts 13 joist lines, including both edges. Two fasteners at each of 26 board-row and 13 joist intersections produce about 676 fasteners, or two 350-count boxes. Picture framing, blocking, stairs, railings, hidden-fastener clips, and manufacturer-specific edge details are not included.
Stock length and cut planning
Boards are rounded up for each row, so the estimate is intentionally conservative when stock is shorter than the deck. Butt joints must land on approved framing, and reusable offcuts depend on the actual layout. Create a cut plan before ordering when staggered seams or multiple stock lengths could reduce waste.
Spacing and structural limits
Use the actual installed face width and the gap required by the decking manufacturer. Composite, PVC, diagonal, and specialty patterns can require different joist spacing and fasteners.
